The Assamese department of Halakura college was established in the year 1991. After its inception, Dhana Bindu Sarma, a Subject teacher of Assamese of Halakura H. S School joined as a guest faculty of the department of Assamese. He ran the Assamese Department very smoothly. At that time in association with Bhupendra Nath Karmakar and Nazural Islam, two other teachers of Halakura H.S. School joined as full time lectures in the year 1994.
In the year 1993-94 side by side with Pass Course in Arts, Honours Course was Introduced in the department of Assamese and since then many students became Honours Graduate. The students of Assamese department showed commendable performance and as a results of it, Some even want for post Graduate degrees and as also Ph.D. They got admitted in Gauhati University, Bodoland University and achieved P.G and Ph. D Degrees. At present, they are working as Assistant professors/Subject teachers in various college, Higher Secondary Schools and other institutions. One of the student of the department joined the college as a Lecturer in the year 2000 and still serving the Department in the same capacity.
At that time, Halakura college was the only higher educational institution in the western most part of Dhubri District. The college took up the responsibility of imparting higher education amongst the students of rural Dhubri bordering Bangladesh and the Indian province of West Bengal. The teachers of Assamese department endeavored spread and popularize Assamese Language and culture not only among the students but also among the community. In the year 1995 the department of Assamese joined hands with Natun Sahitya parisad, Assam as Halakura Unit and brought out the little magazine ‘Angeekar’ giving space for the local youths with literary talent of aptitude.
Later on, in the year 2000 the Department left no stone unturned to encourage the creative minds among the students and community by publishing a yearly magazine ‘Abhax’ the first issue of ;Abhax’ was published in April, 2000.
Assamese Department is publishing its departmental magazine ‘Lawdanga’ yearly from the year 2015. The Department also publish wall magazine ‘Simanta Prahari’ every year during the college week programme. In collaboration with the honours students the Department organized a Literary Forum ‘Asomiya Sahitya Chara’ to create literary and cultural consciousness among the students and community. The Department organized so many seminars, workshops, prose, poetry, writing competitions, quiz and other programmes for enhancing literary creativity of the students of the department. The Department is also conducting ‘ Kavi Sanmilan’ Extempore Speech, Poetry Recitation etc. during observance days such as Shilpi Divas, Rabha Divas etc.

All the faculty are very co-operative, punctual and perform their duties for the betterment of the departmental functions. They are all very active energetic, dynamic and society, educationally responsible persons with great commitment to the department and the college as a whole.

OBJECTIVE :
Assamese language is not the mother tongue of the people of this area. So to make Assamese subject and culture to be popular amongst the students is not very easy against the local culture of this locality, Here Assamese is Second Language and that is why it faced very trouble to learned Assamese. Therefore the students are not easily reached the actual mark points in our aim and object. The awareness of responsibilities, strict discipline and commitment of the faculties are remarkable for the students as well as for the college. The sincerity and regularities of the faculty resulted in the completion of the allotted courses in accordance with the teaching plan of the Specific semester with good feedback of the students in last few years.

THE STRENGTH OF THE DEPARTMENT :
The student-teacher relationship of the department is very co-operative and interactive. We have four members of full time faculties. Annually published magazine, half yearly published wall magazine and no faculty keep himself away from the teaching responsibilities.

VISION :
Arrange language-literature based workshop-seminar to increase the writing and speaking skill of the students.
• To be arranging UGC Sponsored National/International Seminars.
• Departmental Library will be arranged with sufficient of Books, Journals and periodicals.
• With the help of our authority we will arrange well accommodate-separate Department.
• We will increase the Departmental tour for the students to visit the cultural important places.
• This locality is famous for local songs dances, dramas and rituals. We will collect the cultural data and encouraged elements to publish and preserve in our magazine and museum.
• Our department will also able to take language awareness programme in nearby high and higher secondary schools.
• We will take initiative to published research journal.

PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOME :
The syllabus contains three categories language, literature and culture. From the language part, students will know the formation and Devloptment of Assamese Language, relationship with Sanskrit, Pali-Prakrit-Apabhransha and New Indo Aryan Language like Bangla, Udiya, Hindi etc. They also know the relationship with the Non Aryan Language and world language families. From the literature part, students gathers literary knowledge about oral-folk literature, Classic literature, Romantic literature, Modern literature and literary criticism. From the culture part students will get multicoloured cultural knowledge of North-Eastern region.
